How to register your website domain
5 min read
If you want to create your own website, you will need your own domain name. In this tutorial, I'm going to show you how this can be done in just a couple of really simple steps.
Let's get started right away!
What is a domain name?
A domain name is your address on the internet. Think of it just like your real life address: People use it to know where they have to go, when they want to visit you (whether that's at your house or on your website). Each of these addresses is unique, because otherwise we wouldn't know where we would have to go (think the same address twice, but at two completely different locations in town).
As a business, your domain is the first contact point for many of your potential clients. If your domain name looks unprofessional, or it just doesn't match the services & goods you are selling, then it can really have a negative impact on your business. So having a good domain name should not be underestimated!
How to find the right domain name for your website
Since they're unique, it can sometimes be hard to find the right domain name.
Here's what you should be looking for in a domain:
- It should resemble the name of your business
- If your business is international, use a .com domain (they are seen as the most professional)
- It should be easy to spell & pronounce
- It should be as short as possible
The first domain I would always try to get for your company would just be "yourcompanyname.com". If that's not available, look for subtle variations of that name. For example, if your business is called "Fabulous Designs" and fabulousdesigns.com isn't available, try fabulous-designs.com.
If you're just starting your business, chances are you don't even have a business name yet. In these cases, there are tools that can help you find the right names. One of them is called Namelix.
Namelix is an online tool that uses artificial intelligence to generate short and unique brand-able business names. It also helps generate brand keywords as well as a short unique brand description for your business or product.
Just enter a couple of keywords into their website, select your desired length, and let Namelix generate brand names for you. If you come across a domain you like, you can skip to the next step where we'll start the registration process.
Another tool that one can use is Lean Domain Search which has a domain name generator. It uses keywords you type in, which you want your brand or product to be associated with. This helps to generate domain name ideas that are available for registration at that time.
You can use the keywords you already shortlisted or generated for your brand using Namelix to help find that unique domain name. Once you've got a domain name you like, you can move onto the next step!
Domain name registration
There are thousands of places where you can register your domain. The provider I personally love is called Hover. It's one of the most popular domain registrars overall, and I love it, because it's easy to use, cheap & works really well.
Step 1: To start head over to Hover to begin the process. On the landing page, insert the name of the domain that you want to register, then click on the search button.
Step 2: Now we'll see, if the domain is available. If it's available, we can add our domain to the cart and go to checkout.
Step 3: You can increase the domain registration period to more than one year if you choose to. You can also add some additional services if you feel they will be needed to ensure the smooth operation of your online business.
One of the additional services that are added by Hover for free when registering your domain is WHOIS Protection. Once you register a domain name, the domain ownership details are stored in a database managed by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN. The database is known as the WHOIS database, which shows the owners of specific domain names. What WHOIS protection does, is that it keeps your contact information stored in the WHOIS database hidden from the public. Other domain registrars often charge extra for this feature!
Go to checkout
Once you are done, you can proceed to secure checkout, which will take you to the checkout page. You will be required to create an account; if you already have an existing account with Hover then you can click on the “Use an Existing Account” option. After filling in your account information, you will be required to go through and accept the terms and conditions.
Next, you will fill in the relevant registration information as well as the billing information for payment processing. Once you have filled in all the information, you will be directed to review your purchase order details and if the details are correct you can proceed to submit the order. Once done, you will receive the order confirmation and welcome mail via the email you used during registration.
Congratulations, you have successfully registered your first domain name!
You've taken the first step to start your new online presence. You can use the link in the welcome email to sign in to your Hover account, where you can manage connect the domain name to a hosting service to bring your website live. That's it for this tutorial, hope you liked it!
